They lost their homes for a 'dam' that was never built—now their land is a national park.
In the 1960s, the US began displacing around 600 families for a 40-mile reservoir. In 1975, the dam project got shelved after regional authorities voted to cancel it. The acquired land became the 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which now protects the river for many people to use.
